Niki Westman lives in Vancouver - Mount Pleasant and has been an active member of the Work Less Party since its inception. Before moving to BC in 1997, Niki studied Business Administration and Economics in her undergraduate years, and earned a Master of Arts in English, specializing in environmental issues in literature.
Niki hopes that the Work Less Party will inspire and motivate workers, employers, and politicians to discuss work-life balance issues, to find solutions to overwork, and allow for more leisure time in their lives. She also hopes that the Work Less Party will bring awareness to issues of overconsumption and wasteful production so that people will adopt more environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable lifestyles.
After graduating school and, to her surprise, finding two 'perfect' jobs doing supportive work in her fields of interest (natural healing, environmental and aboriginal issues, and conservation-based economic development), Niki encourages everyone to find meaningful work that they are passionate about and that contributes to their idea of a better society.
Seeking more balance in her life and to pursue creative projects, Niki successfully negotiated a 32-hour, 4-day workweek with her current employer, Ecotrust Canada. When she's not number-crunching in the accounting department at her day job, Niki founded and organizes a community garden in her neighbourhood, sews her own clothes, does beadwork, sings in community choirs, plays the piano, dances, choreographs theatrical pieces for Work Less Party events, and is a cycling activist who bikes or walks everywhere, as she has deliberately chosen to not own a car.
So if you see a girl wearing bright, shiny velour pants riding around on a cruiser bicycle, say hi to Niki and tell her how you're doing with your own work-life balance issues. Thanks for your interest in the Work Less Party!
